In the last post, it was announced that the Global Definitions Operator will be one of the new functionalities in PTC Mathcad Prime 3.0. Why is this important? I would say there are three major benefits- time saving, better documentation, and conversion fidelity.
Having the ability to define and then evaluate anywhere in your worksheet eliminates the need for users to have to scroll through their worksheets looking for their definitions and making sure they are physically in the right location of the worksheet for their evaluations to work. Additionally, if a user is doing ‘what if’ tests by changing a specific parameter and noting the effect that it has on calculations or plots that use it, there is no more back and forth between a graph or equation and the original definition. You can now perform those definitions using the Global Definitions Operator right next to, above, or underneath a graph or equation allowing you to directly see how changing your definition impacts your solution, instantly.
Having the ability to be able to decide where exactly in your PTC Mathcad worksheet you would like your definitions and evaluations makes documenting your calculations more flexible and gives you more options in how to present your data, whether to the rest of your engineering team, to other groups within your company, to your customers, or in a published report. It also makes a lot of difference in the flow of your calculations. Now you can define and evaluate as you go within your worksheet instead of having to set up all of the definitions ahead of time at the beginning of a worksheet or equation. It also gives you the ability to even hide your definitions (if you choose to) or stick them in an appendix within the document, allowing your calculations and results to really shine through when reporting results.
Lastly, conversion fidelity is a huge benefit. With the Global Definitions Operator in PTC Mathcad Prime 3.0 you can now convert any similar Global Definitions from past versions of PTC Mathcad seamlessly. You can simply convert your worksheet as is, without any manual workarounds or changes in the structure of the worksheet.
This Global Definitions Operator has been built using the new equation editor along with all the other new features that can be found in Prime, allowing them to be stronger tools for the user.
